GPU Correlation for Next-Generation Radio Telescopes
Abstract
Ongoing technological developments in Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) provide an opportunity for digital processing systems of unprecedented scale. For current and planned arrays with large numbers of receivers, GPU-accelerated correlator systems enable the real-time processing of large bandwidths. The Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment
(CHIME) correlator provides an example of a fully-implemented GPU-based correlator X-Engine, with 1024 AMD Fiji GPU cores providing its substantial computational power. A GPU-based X-Engine for the Next Generation Very Large Array (ngVLA), incorporated into the SCalable REconfigurable And Modular (SCREAM) correlator design, may offer an alternative to the FPGA-based reference design.
